About: my flamenco story

I AM : ARTISTAMeet Hannet Engel, a vibrant flamenco dancer, artist & writer. Read her story…

I AM: ARTISTA As an artist, flamenco dancer, and writer—Hannet Engel’s work is a fusion of cultures and creative expression. She combines flamenco dance with ritual performance art. Vibrant, sensual, and strong, her body of work explores the divine feminine, establishing a deep connection to nature and her own spiritual essence.

My inner world: When Art meets Flamenco

Magic happens when Hannet combines her two great passions: Flamenco and Art. She has always loved fine art and mythology, allowing them to inspire her work in every medium. Hannet creates flamenco articles, fine art, and dance shows as multidimensional experiences, inviting you into her world of wonder. She is a creative producer of several flamenco shows in The Netherlands and New Zealand, author of this flamenco blog, and a flamenco novel she is currently writing. With a Master in Art History and Teaching, Hannet has published numerous background articles and reviews for museums and the flamenco magazine Mundo Flamenco.

The FLAMENCO novel Hannet is working on—born from her creative unconscious—will follow the adventures of flamenco dancer Sol in Sevilla, Spain, and her deep dive into the life of 19th-century flamenco dancer Carmencita. So keep tuned!

Flamenco Dance & live action Painting with Simon Dickey

A magical thing happens when I start dancing flamenco. Especially when it is improvisation and I have no clue of what is about to happen. There I go, my feet and arms draw the lines and movements in the air like a pencil on canvas. Flamenco dance improvisation is like spontaneous sketching that way. And as you can see it is inspiring to other artists as well!

That magic unfolded when I got together with Simon Dickey, a marvelous painter from Raglan on a rooftop in New Zealand. I danced and posed for him for a couple of hours. As he captured me on paper with his fast-tracking pencils and brushes, I felt like a muse.

For me our flamenco painting sessions also capture the absolute inspiration I feel in New Zealand. it comes from a sense of freedom I feel there in its breathtaking nature and grounding presence of the people, Kiwi and Māori alike. Especially in the surfer/ artist village called Raglan, I simply sparkle when I am there! Stay tuned for more Flamenco- in- New Zealand stories to come.

VENUS RISING: a flamenco ritual

VENUS RISING show at De Lievelinge, NL

Venus Rising is an immersive ritual that bathes the audience in music and enchanting video projections of nature and my own dance.

Venus or Aphrodite rises out of the foam of the ocean to be born from fertility into love, beauty, femininity, sensuality and play. This show is an ode to her, this Goddess that I feel can bring up my own femininity and play, and who’s role as an admirer of excellence and beauty has always been preeminent in my life.

To me beauty is to be adored and to be found in all kinds of places. I have always found it in art, especially the art of the ancient Greeks. Now it has come together with my other great passion: flamenco.

But the magic in shows like this all depends on the audience, who chant, and hold the space like the worshippers in ancient cult rites of Dionysus or Demeter. While my Priestess of Love leads the way into ritual, she guides the cult-goers into the temple where I evoke and embody Venus through dancing. Wild! Mesmerising! Beautiful! That is what the audience has uttered to me in shouts of enthusiasm. So please, enjoy the experience here online or collaborate with me live.

FLAMENCO GRAFFITTI

FLAMENCO GRAFFITTI video clip. Music: Tino van der Sman

I loved the graffiti on this site where I was living at the moment: in a Tiny House bordering nature and the city of Dordrecht. So I felt the urge to make this Flamenco Graffiti Sketch, inspired by the new musical composition of Dutch flamenco guitarist Tino van der Sman. Listen to the curious sounds, flamenco transformed! The atonality of his composition is unique and has been a specialisation of Tino since a few years, expanding his knowledge and style to create new variations in flamenco.

Fellow Dutchie and flamenco artist, Tino van der Sman has had my admiration ever since I set foot in Spain when I was 18 years old, and did not know any flamenco artists yet. But I had heard there was a Dutch couple rocking the flamenco scene in Seville: Tino van der Sman and his then partner Mascha Meijman. And so I went to see their show and was in awe of these artists chosing this kind of life, chosing to live flamenco in Sevilla. It feels special to me that I can collaborate with such an established flamenco musician, lending me his music for this video.
